Why Am I Seeing Multiple Airline Charges and Reversals?

Updated over a month ago

When booking flight tickets, customers may occasionally observe what appear to be duplicate charges or a single large pending amount that is subsequently reversed and replaced by multiple smaller transactions. While this may raise concerns at first glance, this is a common practice in airline payment processing and does not indicate any irregular activity on the account.

What Happens ?

Airlines often hold a full amount (e.g., for multiple tickets) as a pre-authorization to secure your booking. This shows up as a pending charge. This hold is not a final transaction but a temporary reservation of funds to secure your booking. Example:

  • €1.500,00 – PENDING

After the booking is confirmed and processed, the airline often reverses this full amount and instead charges you separately for each ticket. For example:

  • €500,00 x 3 (cost of each ticket)
    = €1.500,00

This results in the original pending charge being marked as reversed, and the new ticket charges being listed as completed transactions.

This behavior is controlled by the merchant (airline), not by the card provider or our system. It’s a common process for grouped bookings or when payment is split per passenger or itinerary.

Key Points

  • Your total charge doesn’t change—it just appears in parts.

  • The original pending charge is reversed and not actually debited.

  • There is no unauthorized activity on your account.
