Card types - physical and virtual cards

An overview of the different types of physical and virtual credit cards

Updated over a week ago

Pliant offers both physical and virtual cards.

Physical cards

Pliant currently offers two types of physical cards.

The default physical card is the Blue Card, a Visa Platinum Business credit card, that every member is eligible for and which does not come at any extra costs.

Additionally, Pliant also offers the exclusive Pliant Black Card, which is a Visa Infinite Business credit card and has an additional monthly fee (the fee amount depends on the plan). The Black Card comes with additional card benefits. The latest list of card benefits can be viewed in the Admin App as well as by members who have a Black card in the Cardholder App.

Once a new physical card has been requested and issued, it usually takes 3-4 working days for the cards to be shipped to your organization’s delivery address. The delivery address can be changed at any time by an admin or owner (see here). Physical cards have to be activated in the app before they can be used (see here). The PIN can also be viewed in the app (see here).

Please note, that each member can only have a single physical card at the same time (per organization account). Before activating a second physical card, the first one has to be terminated. This means the total number of physical cards that can be issued for your organization matches its total number of members.

Virtual cards

Pliant also offers two types of virtual credit cards: Single-use and general-use virtual cards. Virtual cards offered by Pliant work just like the physical credit cards, only that no plastic card is printed and shipped. One big advantage is therefore that new virtual cards can be issued and used within seconds.

General-use virtual cards

The general-use virtual cards work very similarly to physical cards. It is possible to assign a monthly limit as well as a per-transaction limit and use the card for online transactions until it expires.

Each member can have several virtual cards at the same time. The number of virtual cards is only limited by the organization's maximum number of virtual cards as per the purchased plan (the Pliant Starter plan includes up to 25 general-use virtual cards at no additional costs).

The large number of available cards allows for much more flexibility, and we recommend issuing separate cards for merchants with regularly recurring payments (e.g. software subscriptions) or projects. Issuing separate cards is more secure as card limits can be adjusted to the requirements of the use case and in case card details get stolen the lower limit reduces the risk. Separate cards also provide a better overview for reporting and accounting purposes.

Single-use virtual cards

This special type of virtual card is convenient for one-time or occasional larger expenses. Here, single-use cards bring an even higher level of security. Cards are automatically canceled after the first transaction is successfully completed. This greatly reduces the risk of fraud.

One further advantage is that it allows you to tailor the card limit to the specific expense. This eliminates the need to assign high permanent limits or adjust limits frequently.
